“The mother-child relationship is paradoxical and, in a sense tragic. It requires the most intense love on the mother’s side, yet this very love must help the child grow away from the mother, and to become fully independent.”
Playfulness is the theme of The Good Mother. To be playful requires a quality of the subconscious right brain, this happens naturally in childhood, but through social conditioning of the left brain, we learn play is not valued in our culture, but instead we are encouraged to think seriously, act in a certain prescribed matter that is socially accepted. So here I have revisited my own childhood memories of my Mother in play with my sister and myself. This sculpture shows the Mother grounded firmly while the children swing and fly up in the air in joyful abandon, knowing they are safe within the guiding hands of their Good Mother.
If we all think back to our childhood we find the enchantment of living, a time when the world was full of beauty and mystery. Certainly a child’s world is fresh and new and awe –inspiring, their modes of sensory perception are showing them things that as adults we no longer see. In the realm of The Good Mother she is playing with her children while still standing on adult soil, she has recaptured the spirit of innocence through the elation of her children.
