Poetry was Gesso’s first love, and it remains at the heart of everything she creates.
Long before sculpture carried her work around the world, she was filling notebooks with poems, drawings and fragments of songs. She became an internationally recognized sculptor, yet words remained the place she returned to when sculpture could not say enough.
CARL
PIANO / PRODUCER
Founder, pianist and producer the gravitational center of the music. He first brought them together as teenagers, then found them again years later and rebuilt what they had lost. Success in the outside world, he now uses that freedom to finance the music and quietly hold this unruly family together. At the center of his complicated heart is Gesso his first love, the love of his life and the unfinished song between them
The Project
Who's in the Gesso Cocteau project 13?
Singer, songwriter, poet and internationally recognized sculptor an artist in every part of her life. Music was her first language, and the songs she writes carry desire, memory, beauty, anger and ghosts. She and Carl fell in love at seventeen, wrote their first songs together, lost one another, and somehow found their way back to the same band.
VENICE BEACH
A LOVE LETTER TO VENICE
Gesso Cocteau grew up in Playa del Rey, California and went to school nearby. Carl and Gesso spent many days and memorable moments together on the beaches of Venice. Gesso’s father lifted weights at Muscle Beach long before weight training entered popular culture. Gesso remembers walking the boardwalk and buying clothes and dresses alive with the colors of the sunset, sunsets made iconic by generations of Southern California film and television. The song celebrates the ocean, the long sand, car shows, free meals shared by Hare Krishna devotees, Harry Perry’s unmistakable guitar, and the generous community that keeps Venice vibrant. ‘Venice Beach’ is our gratitude for a place alive with color and human spirit: our visual and musical love letter to Venice Beach, California.

Her poems become books, her books open into music, and her songs gather memory, desire, and the beautiful trouble of being alive. Across clay, page, and melody, one truth keeps returning: her love for Carl, the boy she knew at seventeen, the man beside her now, and the unfinished song that has followed them through every distance and every homecoming.
