The Band

Who's in Gesso Cocteau's band?

Singer, songwriter, poet and internationally recognized sculptor an artist in every part of her life. Music was her first language, and the songs she writes carry desire, memory, beauty, anger and ghosts. She and Carl fell in love at seventeen, wrote their first songs together, lost one another, and somehow found their way back to the same band.Onstage she never chases attention; she simply begins to sing, and the room turns toward her.

CARL

PIANO / BAND LEADER / PRODUCER

Founder, pianist and producer the gravitational center of the band. He first brought them together as teenagers, then found them again years later and rebuilt what they had lost. Successful in the outside world, he now uses that freedom to finance the music and quietly hold this unruly family together. At the center of his complicated heart is Gesso his first love, his lead singer, and the unfinished song between them

LUKE

RHYTHM / LEAD GUITAR

The beautiful trouble in the band reckless, solitary, sensual and almost impossible to control. He belongs to smoky bars, open roads, his Harley and the Fender Stratocaster that may be the only thing he has ever truly been faithful to. His playing can move from a tight, physical groove to something raw, melodic and dangerous in seconds. Luke always lives slightly outside the band’s order, which is precisely why nobody can stop watching him.

JAZZ

UPRIGHT / ELECTRIC BASS

The warm heartbeat of the band brilliant, funny, generous and trusted by everyone. A formally trained musician and teacher, he possesses enormous technique but never lets the technique get in the way of the groove. Carl’s oldest friend, he is the man who finds people when they disappear and somehow brings them home again. When personalities collide, Jazz is often the smile, the steady bass line and the human bridge holding everyone together.

BLUE

SAXOPHONE / FEATURED SOLOIST

The quiet danger in the band contained, masculine and magnetic. He never fights for attention; he waits until the song needs him and then changes the temperature of the entire room. His saxophone begins intimate and restrained before opening into something emotional, muscular and completely his own. Blue is a musician first: when his solo arrives, everything else seems to move aside and let him speak.

SNAP

DRUMS / PERCUSSION

The pulse and the anchor, Blue’s almost-twin brother and one of the warmest souls in the band.

Carl nicknamed him “Snap” in high school because when there were no drums nearby, his fingers were snapping or playing invisible congas. He loves the beat, loves people, and somehow stays thoughtful, positive and grounded while chaos erupts around him.

When Carl began rebuilding the band, Snap was already calling to say “I’m in” before Carl even had the chance to ask.
